Their skills together as a team are unmatched and we are so excited to see what’s in store for future games. Commonwealth Games 2022

Ipswich Sports Club are thoroughly enjoying the Commonwealth games this year! We have a plethora of amazing athletes that we have had the pleasure of knowing that are playing for Team England in Birmingham.

Lucy Turmel recently claimed her fourth international tour victory in the Women’s Boston Open. After years of hard work, she was then selected for Team England’s final squad for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham!

The 22-year-old pushed defending champion Joelle King from New Zealand to the max in the quarter-finals. Despite being the underdog, Lucy fought hard, showing her opponent what she was made of in the impressive second game, fighting back from 10-2 and saving 11 game points in all before King prevailed by 9-11 18-16 11-9 14-12 defeat. Lucy has been playing and training at ISC from a young age – the Club is so proud of her success and our members have loved watching and cheering her on.

Another squash professional and dad of three Daryl Selby is competing for Team England in the men’s doubles.

The Harlow-born right-hander combines squash with a career as a sporting agent, managing professional athletes across multiple sports.

Selby reached a career-high world ranking of World No. 9 in April 2010, he won the British National Squash Championships in 2011 and was a gold medalist with the England Team during the 2013 World Team Championships.

He and his doubles partner Adrian Waller won their semi-final game against Scotland’s Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart in an incredible game on Sunday the 7th. They got through to the final where they played England’s James Willstrop and Declan James. They just lost out 2 – 1 but played some amazing games – well done Team England!

Team Scotland squash star Lisa Aitken shelved her singles campaign at the last minute to focus on doubles at the Commonwealth Games.

The Montrose-born player broke her playing hand in the middle of June 2022, leaving her racing to reach full fitness at her third Games.

Aitken scratched singles in favour of mixed doubles hopes with Greg Lobban and women’s doubles with Georgia Adderley.

They’ve had an amazing run, getting into the quarter-finals for both women’s and mixed doubles, just falling short against England’s Sarah-Jane Perry and Alison Waters in the women’s and Australia’s Donna Lobban and Cameron Pilley in the mixed. An incredible effort from this brilliant player.

Of course, we must also shine a light on Ipswich Sports Club alumni, Harry & Hannah Martin who have represented England in the men’s and ladies’ Hockey team.

Hannah played number 7 in the Women’s Hockey final on Sunday against Australia and they won 2 – 1! What an incredible outcome! Team England were 2 – 0 up in the first quarter and managed to hold their lead till the final whistle.

England captain Hollie Pearne-Webb said: “Bit lost for words. It’s the first time in history we’ve ever done this.”

A special shout out to the men’s England team for securing bronze at the Games by beating South Africa 6-3 in a remarkable contest at the Games!

Chris Grimwood, General Manager at Ipswich Sports Club has commented: “I am always amazed and incredibly proud of the talent that comes through ISC. Across all sports, we have had some amazing athletes train with us and be a part of our ever-growing team. We have really enjoyed keeping up with the games so far and cheering on our members and alumni, and I am excited for the next steps for these athletes and those to come. If ever there was a time to make squash an Olympic sport, now is the time!”
