Working in Schools by Emily Ison
What happens in an average school session?
‘We provide both curriculum and after school activities on site at all our primary schools.
We use mini squash nets to provide an ‘in school’ squash court experience, allowing all the students to get a feel for what a real squash court is like’
How many children attend?
‘We coach anywhere from 18-34 children per session and we work with all year groups from reception to year 6‘
How does it work?
‘Each school takes part in a 12 week course and for those gifted and talented children they are selected to represent their primary school at the ‘ISC Futures Fund Saxon Cup’ here at Ipswich Sports Club. Our programme has had great success in recruiting 90% of our current junior programme’
What do you enjoy about schools coaching?
‘Schools work is my favourite part of my role, I love Squash and by working with local schools I get the chance to introduce our fabulous sport to children who traditionally might never get to try squash. I especially like the chance to unearth some hidden talent along the way too.
What’s the key to great schools sessions?
‘The key to delivering a great schools session is enthusiasm, good communication and fun educational activities.’
