ISC Tennis Team Report – Floodlit & Winter Leagues 2023-4

The local winter tennis leagues recently concluded and as always Ipswich & district provides an excellent standard of tennis with many tightly fought matches for ISC’s 9 teams.

In the Floodlit league, our 1st teams excelled across the board winning the Ladies, Mens and Mixed 1st divisions – a superb performance.

  • In the Men’s section our 2nd team also had a successful season winning division 2 so are promoted to join the 1st team in division 1 – so we’re guaranteed some extra competitive home and away matches next season!  The Men’s 3rd team were solid – holding firm at mid table in division 3.
  • On the Ladies side there was tougher competition lower down the divisions and of course the added mix of challenging weather, injuries and availability took their toll so despite battling hard right to the very last matches Ladies 2nd and 3rd teams were relegated. With time to regroup over the summer they’ll have an extra incentive next season to play their best tennis and aim for promotion.
  • Our Mixed 2nd team had stiff competition against many other 1st teams in division 2 so were relegated, whilst Mixed 3 were consistent and held firm at mid table in div 3.

In the Saturday Winter League our Ladies 1st team had a solid season coming 3rd in division 1 and Ladies 2nd team had a very successful first season after promotion to division 2 securing a healthy mid table slot.  On the Men’s side there was very tight competition in division 1 with 3 teams on level points having won 8 out of 10 matches so it came down to number of sets won with our Men’s 1st team taking 3rd place.  Our Men’s 2nd team fought hard to come mid table in division 3.  Well done to all.

Many thanks as ever go to all the league organisers, team captains, parents/drivers of youngsters, snack providers, tennis committees, court leaf sweepers and coaches for their organisation and support as well as every player that has represented Ipswich Sports Club – many that consistently turn out for every match and those that drop everything at the last minute to make up a team!  In the winter months it really can be a challenge to leave a warm, cosy fireplace to play outside in chilly conditions but it’s keeping us all super fit and there’s always plenty of laughs, great tennis and team spirit on display along the way!

Summer league fixtures are now under way and thankfully the weather has perked up as the first outdoor match had a temperature of approx. 5 degrees with a hefty wind chill factor on top – long may this sunshine continue.
