What a day! The sun was shining, the crowd was buzzing, and we had 32 players smashing it out in the American doubles tournament. And let’s just say, some players were running on pure adrenaline—looking at you, James Long! Not only did James play in the tournament, but he also had to ace his way through two club championship finals. Quality over quantity, folks! With scores of 7 & 5, and a solid 12 wins from 16 games (75% win ratio), James took the top spot faster than a Federer serve! 💥
Chris Palmer was right on his heels, playing three rounds with scores of 4, 7, and 5. His 16/24 66% win ratio were enough to secure second place. Talk about consistency—like Nadal grinding it out on clay. 💪
And a special shoutout to our youngest competitor, Oliver Michael, who, at just 10 years old, played like a pro! Not losing a single match with scores of 4, 7, 5, and 5, he earned a well-deserved third spot. The kid’s got game, and it’s only a matter of time before we’re all asking him for lessons. 🎾
It was fantastic to see all three youngsters mixing in with the adults, showing the kind of spirit that reminds us why we love this sport. Full results of the American tournament are below, but let’s dive into the finals action!
The 2024 ISC Club Championships & TJ Sports Finals: A Grand Slam of a Day
More than 60 spectators watched the action unfold, drinks in hand, soaking up the sunshine like they were at Wimbledon, while the south of England was dealing with floods, we only had a couple of tiny showers—clearly, the tennis gods were on our side! ☀️🍹
Men’s Singles Final:
The day kicked off with a power-hitting showdown between John Klug and last year’s champ, Steve Blunden. John started with such a bang that two of his serves went straight through the back fence! 😱 No joke, the man’s serve is practically a weapon but Steve, ever the wily veteran, used his long reach to stretch for every shot and slowly pulled ahead. By the end, Steve was crowned ISC Club Champion 2024. 👑🎾
Ladies’ Singles Final:
It was déjà vu for the ladies’ final as Alice Flatman and Hollie Newton squared off again, just like last year and just like a well-timed drop shot, Alice snuck past Hollie to take the title for the second year running. 🏆 Two years in a row—clearly, Alice knows how to keep her eye on the prize!
Mixed Doubles Final:
James Long, running on fumes by now, paired up with Tip Flory to face Shane Sparrow and Ann Hutchinson. This match had more twists and turns than a five-set thriller at the US Open! After three sets and a championship tiebreaker, James and Tip walked away victorious. Safe to say James deserved an ice bath (and probably a nap) after that! 💤🎾
Men’s Doubles Final:
Steve Blunden wasn’t done yet! Teaming up with Mark Wootton, he took on Craig Clarke and (guess who?) James Long. James must have been seeing tennis balls in his sleep by this point, but Steve and Mark pulled through to win the men’s doubles title.
TJ Sports Final:
Another crowd-pleaser saw Ryan Lambert & Dean Swift square off against Graham Fretwell & Dan Pipkin. It was a match that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, with Ryan and Dean clinching victory in fine style. 🎉
Ladies’ Doubles Final:
And now for the marathon match of the day—the ladies’ doubles! Hollie Newton & Louise Brown faced Melanie Allard & Louise Woods in an epic, three-set, 3.5-hour showdown. This match had more drama than a Murray five-setter at Wimbledon! In the end, Hollie & Louise powered through, taking the title after a battle that could’ve gone either way.
What a day! A huge thanks to everyone who played, cheered, and kept the atmosphere as lively as a packed Centre Court. Looking forward to next year, but until then—time to work on those serves and volleys! 🎾🍾
