Member Notice Club subscriptions and Closure

Member Notice

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Ipswich Sports Club Executive met remotely this evening to discuss whether to close all facilities and also the issue of membership fees.

It has been decided that due to the ever increasing measures being put in place and the continuing spread of Coronavirus, the Club will close all facilities for the time being until further notice.  We feel that this is the responsible thing to do in the exceptional circumstances facing this country at this time.  Do not come and use the outdoor facilities – they are closed until further notice.

Monthly Members

The Club will not be collecting any Direct Debit payments with effect from 1 April 2020 and whilst the Club facilities remain closed, so no money will be drawn from members’ Bank Accounts until further notice.  This will therefore apply to all Monthly members who have not cancelled their Direct Debits.

It will also apply to those who have contacted the Club since it closed on Friday, 20 March 2020 and have not yet had a response regarding suspension due to the influx of enquiries following the sudden closure, so please do not worry.  We appreciate your patience and support during this difficult time.

Unfortunately, if members have already cancelled their Direct Debit Instructions, this will be processed as a membership cancellation rather than a suspension, and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

Annual Members

For members who have paid upfront on an annual basis for their membership, the Club will simply add time onto members’ current membership term to cover the period of closure of the facilities.  This will be processed at the time of your next current renewal date of membership.

This does mean that the Club will have little or no revenue coming in for the foreseeable future.  Fortunately we have some cash reserves so we will be able to meet our essential outgoings in the short term but this situation could continue for far longer and cause the Club significant difficulties over time.

Ipswich Sports Club, like some other clubs in a similar position, are asking members to consider diverting their membership payments or making donations into a fund.  We have received many messages already from members wanting to continue their support, irrespective of whether the facilities close.

The facilities have only been closed for a matter of days and already people are realising just how big a part of their life the Club is.  It is for that reason that any support you can give will be invaluable to our recovery and getting back to normal.

Payments should be set up as a standing order or one-off payment as follows:  Sort Code 30-94-55 and Account Number 04745168.  Please ensure that you put DONATION as the reference, followed by your surname and if possible your membership number eg. DONATION/SMITH 1234.

The Club has worked tirelessly to get to its current position so to have this happen is truly heart breaking but we will get through this.  It is also important to remember that the priority must be to slow the spread of the virus and in doing so to save lives.

We are working with our staff to make appropriate arrangements for them at what is an incredibly difficult time.

We wish you all the best.  Your health and well-being is the most important thing so please stay safe and adhere to the Government advice.

We will continue to monitor developments daily and we will keep you updated over the coming weeks with any changes.

Government Announcement – Club Closure

In response to the announcement from the Prime Minister Friday evening the club is now closed.  We will take guidance from the authorities on what activities we are allowed to continue. A further update will be sent out on Monday.

All this information is very new and we will be looking into how this impacts us all in the coming days. I am sure you will all have lots of questions and queries especially on membership and we ask that you allow us a few days to send out further communication and will aim to answer all your questions.

be safe

Meet club studio instructor Momtaz…

I first started yoga when I felt that something was wrong with the way I was thinking about life events. Over several years, I tried different forms of Hatha yoga and meditation to improve my mental and physical condition.

I have practiced popular styles such as Ashtanga yoga and Iyengar yoga which at the time improved my physicality (I was stiff and floppy as anything when I started out!), however my mind remained pretty much the same.

I then went to live and work in a Buddhist commune for 3 years living a full-time life of a spiritual practitioner. I moved back to Ipswich as I realized that I loved the urban lifestyle and I longed to be closer to my family and old friendship groups. During this time I also had a severe injury which meant that I had to stop Hatha yoga altogether and I had to think deeper about what yoga was really about if I wanted to continue to practice it.

Since then, slowly I have rebuilt my practice and in 2018 I started teaching Hatha yoga emphazing the value of physical technique, alignment and integration above forcing physical strength and flexibility to happen. In this way the body demands love and respect, from which true equanimity and improved mental health can be experienced. I also love LBT and toning classing and will apply the principles that I have learnt in yoga.

I love the feeling of making people feel good and positive about themselves through physical activity!

Studio News – instructors to mix tracks for Les Mills classes starting 2 March 2020

Studio News

Our studio instructors will be mixing tracks and music for our Les Mills classes – Pump, Combat and Balance starting next Monday 2nd March. The next release is due early April. We know you look forward to all your old favourites.

Meet our long standing Studio instructor – Ivan

Ivan got into fitness when he was about 20 after joining a local boxing club. He went on to box competitively for about 7 years and in the last two years was the Eastern Counties champion in the light welter weight division.

After competing he decided to start up and run his own boxing club. For several years the club proved very successful bringing both young and old into the club.

It was whilst running the boxing club that Boxercise and Boxaerobics came onto the scene so he decided to qualify and incorporate it into his club.

After over 20 years in boxing he decided to hang up his gloves and have a go at group fitness.

He started at Fitness First in Ipswich with Boxercise and then went on to Next Generation (David Lloyd) Ipswich. where he qualified in Body Pump, Body Combat, Body Attack, Spinning, Exercise to music and fitness level two.

Ivan is a regular instructor here at Ipswich Sports Club and some other local clubs, he teaches 16 classes a week including, Pump, Combat, Spin, Boxercise and Hiit.

Ivan is arguably the most experienced fitness instructor and at 67 years old proves there is no limit if you keep fit…

He says he loves teaching and takes pleasure in watching his class participants enjoying taking part in his classes.

‘And while I’m fit and healthy who wouldn’t want to get paid to stay in shape’ a quote from Ivan…

What Karen (Studio Manager) says about Ivan:

‘Ivan is a long standing fitness instructor with ISC whose enthusiasm for the fitness industry is evident as well as his loyalty to our Club. He is reliable, versatile and always willing to help out with cover whenever he can. He is a key member of our instructional team.’

Meet Mag’s (Club Studio Instructor)

Meet Mag’s our popular studio instructor…

I’ve been teaching group exercise since my student days back in the dark ages! and still thoroughly enjoy the social side of the class environment.
To be able to achieve the goals of getting fitter, stronger and more supple while meeting people and making friends is a great motivator for all of us – coaches and participants alike.

I started out as a freestyle coach but now teach mainly Les Mills programmes including BodyPump, BodyCombat, BodyBalance and CXWorx as I like the ongoing education and standards it has introduced to the industry.

I enjoy all the programmes and love the variety, but Combat is probably my favourite stressbuster; after a bad day in the office it’s better I hit some fresh air than anyone or anything else. I live in Ipswich with my family and have a ‘day job’ in the world of shipping.

Meet our Studio Manager

Karen Turmel:

I have always enjoyed participating in all kinds of fitness and decided to turn that passion into my job.  I have been teaching group exercise classes now for over 20 years and since before I had my 3 children.

I took over the role of Studio Manager more than 5 years ago now and consider myself very lucky to have the support of an amazing team of Instructors to work with which makes my job so much easier and enjoyable!

I teach a variety of freestyle type classes including step, hiit, circuits, conditioning, stretch & tone, stability balls and resistance bands.  Step would have to be named as my all time favourite.

I gain satisfaction from seeing the class participants enjoying themselves whilst achieving their personal goals of getting fitter, stronger and more flexible.  Group exercise is a great way of improving confidence and meeting other like minded people who often become firm friends.
