Richard Green has been chosen to play for Team GB at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup!

Ipswich Sports Club are delighted to announce that Richard Green from Coggeshall, Essex, has been chosen to play for Great Britain in the Quad Tennis Singles! He has been coached by our very own Tennis Manager Chris Daynes and has now been chosen to represent Team GB for this event – what an incredible opportunity!

Taking place in Vilamoura, Portugal on 2nd – 8th May 2022, The BNP Paribas World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis and Billie Jean King Cup. Forty-four teams from twenty-two nations are set to take part in this year’s event, the Quad teams being USA, Netherlands, South Africa, Japan, Brazil, Great Britain, Israel, and Turkey.

The squad of 14 players will represent Great Britain across all four events (Mens, Womens, Quad and Juniors) and Richard Green will be making his debut for the quad team after reaching a career-best singles world ranking at No.14 in February.

Richard was born with cerebral palsy and started playing tennis with his mother for fun, who subsequently contacted the Tennis Foundation in 2008 to see if he was eligible to play. Since then Richard has had an incredible career, winning many tournaments all across the country and overseas. He has been playing and training with Ipswich Sports Club since 2017 and we are incredibly proud to have him as part of the team.

Former National Champion Green said “I’m so honoured to be selected for the World Team Cup. It will be a great experience.” Tennis Coach Chris Daynes of Ipswich Sports Club comments “Richard has been a valued member of Ipswich Sports Club for 5 years and it has been a pleasure to see his confidence and skill grow over the years. We have no doubt he will do us proud and we can’t wait to see him in action, doing what he does best!”
